Frank Zhu is Chief Executive Officer of Pearl Studio and leads an executive leadership team focused on developing and creating extraordinary world-class entertainment content and experiences for consumers both in China and around the world. He was appointed to his current position in May, 2016. Respected and recognized for his accomplishments throughout the entertainment industry, brings to Pearl Studio a broad range of leadership experiences from some of the most significant and successful entertainment companies in the world, where he was involved or responsible for the creation of animated content, production, marketing, promotion, brand management, and the full development and exploitation of the many ancillary businesses that entertainment franchises generate. Frank is a founding member of Pearl Studio’s corporate executive team and previously served as the Vice President of the company.
Prior to joining Pearl Studio, Frank co-founded leading children’s entertainment and media company in China – Taomee, and served as its Executive Vice President, where he successfully brought the company public (NYSE:TAOM) in Jun, 2011. During his time tenure at Taomee, Frank was the Chief Producer of 300 episodes of the hit Chinese animated TV series “Mole” and “Seer,” as well as five animated feature films which ranked among the greatest of all-time at the domestic box office.
Prior to Taomee, Frank played a key role for the Disney organization working at the Walt Disney China representative office and later the Walt Disney Co. (China) for 5 years, where he was one of the first professional managers of The Walt Disney Company (China), ushering in the golden age of Disney’s ancillary businesses in China. During his time with the legendary company, he established Disney China’s Toys licensing business.

As Chief Creative Officer for Pearl Studio, Peilin Chou is responsible for leading and shaping the animation studio’s overall creative direction and overseeing production and development for all entertainment the company produces, including currently in production feature films Abominable, a co-production with DreamWorks Animation which will be distributed in 2019 by Universal Pictures, Over the Moon, directed by legendary animator and Academy Award® Winner Glen Keane, to be released by Netflix in 2020, and The Monkey King which co-developed with Stephen Chow.
Peilin joined Pearl Studio in September, 2015 as Head of Creative. Since her arrival, she has established a strong and experienced international creative team as well as a strong creative pipeline with more than a dozen active projects shepherded by world-renowned storytellers and filmmakers. Additionally, Peilin also launched Pearl’s annual Brain Trust Summit, which has become an anticipated gathering and collaboration between Eastern and Western industry creative talent since 2015.
Peilin Chou comes Pearl Studio with over two decades of industry experience in film, television, and theater. Highlights include: Vice President of Original Series at Spike; Senior Vice President of Programming at AZN Television; Director of Development at Nickelodeon; and Development Executive at Walt Disney Feature Animation and Touchstone Pictures, where she was part of the team that developed and produced Mulan, Toy Story 2, Phenomenon and Romy & Michele’s High School.
Peilin received her BA in Communication Studies from UCLA. She currently works in both NYC and Shanghai.
Head of Operations, Pearl Studio
Cindy Zhou serves as Head of Operation for Pearl Studio, and oversees Human Resources, Corporate Finance and all external and internal Corporate Communications. As a member of the studio’s senior management team, Zhou is leading the operation of the company working to extend its presence in the global market.
Cindy joined the company as Head of Human Resources in 2014 when the company was known as Oriental DreamWorks. She helped grow a workforce of more than 350 employees in every sector of the company’s business, fulfilling demands that included key hires in production, corporate strategy and business development, among other areas.
Zhou’s role was expanded to include Corporate Communications in 2016 and Corporate Finance leadership in 2017. With the launch of Pearl Studio, she is charged with overseeing the company’s staffing and administrative needs as it grows from a Shanghai based operation to an international company with satellite offices in other cities including New York and Los Angeles.
Cindy has helped several international brands establish Human Resources systems in her 20-year career. Cindy previously worked with Ermenegildo Zegna for 11 years as their Head of Human Resources in Greater China and was also the renowned fashion brand’s Senior Business Executive Manager and Retail Capability for the Asia Pacific region. Cindy was the first local HR Manager for The Walt Disney Company China. She was responsible for HR’s due diligence and post integration for The Walt Disney China’s merger & acquisitions.
Dagan Potter Head of Studio, Pearl Studio
As Head of Studio for Pearl Studio, Dagan Potter is responsible for supervising physical production of Pearl Studio’s existing and upcoming animation projects. He was appointed to the position in 2017 and leads the studio’s Creative Hub production strategy and serves as the company liaison to integrate Pearl Studio into the work flow process ensuring Chinese and international talent and worldwide outsourcing partners create the highest quality family-oriented feature animation motion pictures for the global market, with hyper-appeal in China.
Dagan joined Pearl Studio (previous known as Oriental DreamWorks) in 2013 as Digital Supervisor, where he played a key role responsible for the studio’s content production. He was Head of Visual Effects of Series for the hit TV program Dragons: Riders of Berk. During the production of the first American-Sino co-production on an animated film Kung Fu Panda 3, Dagan’s extensive production experience in China helped him form the teams. He led Visual Development, Modeling, Surfacing, Character Effects, Effects, Matt Painting and Animation, which are all crucial to the completion of the film. Kung Fu Panda 3 became the first animated movie in Mandarin under his leadership. The movie grossed more than USD $500M worldwide at the box-office and was one of the most successful animated films ever released in China.
Prior to Pearl Studio, Dagan worked on a series of well-known projects such as Penguins Of Madagascar, Madagascar 3, Puss And Boots, Kung Fu Panda , Day After Tomorrow, and Superman Returns, among others.
PC Xu Head of Ancillary, Pearl Studio
As head of ancillary, Pengchong (PC) Xu oversees all aspects of business operations and development of the ancillary department at Pearl Studio, including Joint-promotion, Consumer Products, Interactive and Location Based Entertainment.
Pengchong (PC) Xu is recognized as an expert within the licensing industry with extensive experience and remarkable insights on the development of the ancillary business in China. He is a member of Advisory Committee of LIMA (Licensing Industry Merchandiser’ Association) Greater China, also serves as an advisor for LIMA’s Think Tank.
Under Pengchong’s leadership, while overseeing the campaign for Kung Fu Panda 3, Pearl Studio strategically aligned with top domestic brands from key industries, e-commerce platforms, and brick-and-mortar retailers creating a high impact universe of ancillary partnerships that maximized the “Kung Fu Panda” (KFP) brand. Related industries included FMCG, automobile, finance, retail, and theme parks. The cross-border cooperation between Pearl Studio and its partners generated almost RMB 1.5 billion of promotional and marketing value, and the ancillary business retail sales surpassed RMB 1 billion, equal to KFP3’s box office earnings. KFP3’s ancillary business has become an industry benchmark. The National Museum of China Lifestyle IP, which was initiated by Pearl Studio’s ancillary team, achieved the Museum of the Year at 2018 China Licensing Awards. The award is co-organized by LIMA and Licensing Expo China, and is judged by experts from all over the world and online ballot.
PC previously worked as Senior Category Manager at The Walt Disney Company, where he built up the toys business and tripled the company’s CE growth rate within two years.
PC holds an MBA from BI Norwegian Business School and a BA from Zhejiang University.
Designer, Brand Consultant and Artist Alan Chan
The Pearl Studio logo portrays the spirit of ancient philosophy from the East working in harmony with modern technique from the West. While the symbolism of the hand, the pearl, and the halo are deeply rooted from the East; the modern, Western treatment of the logo completes the company’s DNA.
The hand is cradling and offering a precious bright pearl, borrowing the meaning from an old Chinese phrase “bright pearl in the palm” . This is the visualisation of Pearl Studio producing films with exceptional creativity, craftsmanship; and its belief in bringing joy to families; offering this treasure from the Orient to billions across the world.
The formation of the hand in one dynamic single stroke symbolises Pearl Studio’s original creation process from start to the end; while the use of the halo, not only does it form the “P” for Pearl, it also celebrates harmony and completeness.
